Churchill owned property (with his brother) that was leased for a race track by his nephew, Meriwether Lewis Clark, now known as Churchill Downs. Clark created the Kentucky Derby in 1875 to provide a feature race attraction for the new track. Churchill and Clark are buried in the same tract location in Cave Hill cemetery, which seems only fitting.
